Can You Buy a Kitchen Direct from a Trade Supplier? (Yes — and Here’s Why You Should)

March 9, 2026

If you’ve ever tried to get a price from a trade kitchen supplier, you’ll know the frustration. You find a company you like the look of, you try to get a quote, and somewhere along the way you hit a wall. “Trade only.” “Account holders only.” “Please speak to your installer.”

It’s enough to make you give up and head to one of the big showrooms — where someone in a suit will spend three hours showing you kitchens you didn’t ask for and then hand you a quote that somehow comes to £18,000 for a kitchen that looks suspiciously like the one you saw online for half the price.

Here’s what most homeowners don’t know: you don’t have to do it that way.

What “Trade Only” Actually Means

When a kitchen supplier says they’re “trade only,” what they usually mean is that they’ve built their business model around selling to fitters and builders rather than directly to the public. It’s not a legal restriction. It’s a business choice — and it’s one that suits the supplier and the fitter far more than it suits you.

The way it typically works is this: your fitter has an account with the supplier. They get a trade discount. They then quote you a price for the kitchen — which includes the kitchen cost, their fitting fee, and sometimes a procurement fee on top. You never see the original price. You have no idea what the kitchen actually cost. You’re just handed a total and asked to sign.

That’s not a criticism of fitters — most of them are honest and do a good job. But it does mean you’re paying for a layer of the supply chain that you don’t necessarily need.

So Can the Public Buy Directly from a Trade Supplier?

At SJ Ball, yes — absolutely. We’re a trade kitchen supplier based in Manchester, and we sell directly to homeowners as well as to the trade. You don’t need a fitter’s account. You don’t need to go through an intermediary. You just come to us.

We’ve been supplying kitchens for over 20 years, and in that time we’ve worked with everyone from large developers fitting out multiple properties to homeowners replacing a single kitchen in a terraced house. The product is the same. The quality is the same. The only difference is who we’re talking to.

What Do You Actually Get When You Buy Direct?

When you come to us directly, a few things change in your favour.

You deal with one person. That’s me, Steve. I’ll design your kitchen, price it up, and be the person you call if you have a question. There’s no account manager, no sales team, no one passing you from department to department. If something’s wrong, you speak to the person who made the decision — which tends to focus the mind.

You see the real price. There’s no markup being added by a third party. What we quote is what you pay. You can compare that against any other quote you’ve had and make a proper like-for-like decision.

You get bespoke sizing as standard. This is the one that surprises people most. Our cabinets are made to your measurements, not to a standard size range. That means no filler panels, no awkward gaps, no compromises to make the kitchen fit the room. It fits because we made it to fit.

You get a 10-day lead time. Made-to-order doesn’t mean waiting months. From confirmed order to delivery is typically 10 working days. That’s faster than most of the big names.

“But Don’t I Need a Fitter Anyway?”

Yes, in most cases you will still need someone to fit the kitchen — unless you’re confident doing it yourself. Buying direct from us doesn’t change that. What it does change is who controls the supply side of the project.

When you buy through a fitter, the fitter chooses the supplier, controls the pricing, and manages the relationship. When you buy direct from us, you control all of that. You choose the kitchen you want. You know what it costs. You then hire a fitter separately — and because you’re supplying the kitchen yourself, you’ll often find fitters are happy to quote for labour only, which is a much more straightforward conversation.

Some of our customers bring their fitter to the showroom with them, which works well. The fitter sees exactly what they’re working with, can flag anything that needs adjusting before the order is placed, and everyone goes into the job with the same information. No surprises on site.

What About Quality?

This is the question that matters most, and it’s the one I’m most confident answering.

Our cabinets are built using 18mm board with cam and dowel assembly — that’s rigid construction, not flat-pack. The carcasses are the same specification you’d find in a premium kitchen from one of the big names, and in some cases better. Hinges and drawer boxes are Blum, which are guaranteed for life. Doors come from a range of over 100 styles across gloss, matt, shaker, handleless and painted finishes.

One of our customers — a builder with 20 years in the trade — put it better than I could: “Better quality than a Howdens or Magnet kitchen and also a good bit cheaper.”

That’s not a line from a marketing brochure. It’s a Google review from someone who has fitted hundreds of kitchens and knows exactly what he’s looking at.

Come and See for Yourself

We’ve recently opened a small showroom in Manchester where you can see the cabinet quality in person, handle the doors, and have a proper conversation about your kitchen without any pressure. It’s not a big glossy showroom — it’s four displays, a large range of sample doors, and me. Which is exactly the point.

If you’d like to come in, you can book a visit through the website or just give us a call on 0161 509 4221. If you’d prefer to start with a quote, fill in the form and we’ll come back to you within 24 hours.

Trade prices. No middleman. Your kitchen, done properly.
