Wren Kitchens has grown rapidly over the past few years and now has large showrooms across the UK. They market themselves as offering quality kitchens at competitive prices, with a slick showroom experience and in-house fitting. But how do they actually compare when you look at the details?

I'm Steve from SJB Trade Kitchens. I've been in the kitchen industry for over 20 years, and I believe in giving people honest information so they can make the right decision. Here's how we compare to Wren on the things that actually matter.

Wren invests heavily in their showrooms. They're big, impressive spaces with dozens of full kitchen displays. The experience is designed to get you excited — and to get you to sign up on the day. Their sales process typically involves a long appointment, a 3D design, and a quote that comes with a time-limited discount.

At SJB, we don't have a massive showroom with 50 displays. We have a working showroom in Oldham where you can see the build quality, touch the doors, and talk to me directly about what you need. There's no sales pressure, no time-limited offers, and no obligation. Our prices are the same whether you visit on Monday or Saturday, in January or July.

Wren is known for their promotional pricing — big discounts that make the kitchen look like a bargain. But those discounts are calculated from an inflated starting price. The “50% off” kitchen was never really that price to begin with.

SJB offers one consistent price all year round. No sales, no fake discounts, no pressure to “buy today to get this price.” Our kitchens are typically 30-50% cheaper than comparable offerings from companies like Wren, because we don't have the overheads of massive showrooms and national advertising campaigns.

Carcasses: Wren uses 18mm carcasses on their premium ranges, but their entry-level ranges use thinner board. Check the specification carefully. At SJB, every kitchen uses 18mm Egger or Kronospan board with 18mm backs — no exceptions, no tiered quality levels.

Build method: Wren supplies rigid-built units on most ranges, which is good. SJB is rigid-built on every range. Every unit arrives fully assembled.

Doors: Wren offers a wide range of door styles. Our gloss doors are MDF with acrylic coating or lacquered — never vinyl. Our Painted Shaker doors are solid wood. We focus on six core styles done to a very high standard rather than dozens of options with varying quality.

Hardware: We use Blum soft-close as standard on every unit, plus Hafele and Kessebohmer for storage solutions. Ask Wren exactly what brand of hinges and runners they use on the range you're looking at.

Wren offers design, supply, and installation as a package. SJB is supply-only — we provide the kitchen, and you arrange your own fitter. This means you're in control of the installation and you can choose a local fitter you trust.

The advantage of supply-only is transparency. You can see exactly what you're paying for the kitchen and exactly what you're paying for the fitting. With a bundled package, those costs are hidden, and you can't compare properly.
