Rigid Built vs Flat Pack Kitchens: What’s the Difference?

When you’re buying a new kitchen, one of the first big decisions is whether to go for rigid built or flat pack cabinets. As a kitchen manufacturer with over 20 years in the industry, I’ve seen it all. The choice you make here has a huge impact on the quality, lifespan, and even the final cost of your project. A lot of the big national retailers push flat pack because it’s cheap for them to store and deliver, but is it the best choice for you?

Let’s be honest, they are not the same thing. A rigid kitchen is delivered with the cabinets pre-assembled, glued and dowelled in a factory. A flat pack kitchen arrives as a box of panels that you or your fitter have to assemble on site. I’ll break down the real-world differences to help you decide.

Carcass Quality: The Foundation of Your Kitchen

The single biggest difference between a good kitchen and a bad one is the carcass. It’s the bit you don’t really see, but it provides all the strength. Most flat pack kitchens use 15mm or 18mm thick board for the sides, top and bottom, but then they cheap out on the back panel, using a flimsy 3mm or 6mm piece of hardboard that you nail on. This offers very little structural integrity.

All our cabinets are built rigid as standard. We use high-density 18mm Egger or Kronospan board for the entire carcass – including an 18mm solid back panel. This makes the unit incredibly strong and square. It won’t bow or twist over time, even when filled with heavy plates and pans. As a trade kitchen cabinet manufacturer, we know that a solid back panel is non-negotiable for a quality, long-lasting kitchen.

Assembly Time, Strength & Longevity

A flat pack kitchen requires every single cabinet to be built from scratch on site. This uses a simple cam and dowel system. It’s a job that adds a significant amount of time (and therefore cost) to your kitchen fit. Because they are held together by a few metal fittings, they are prone to loosening over time, causing doors to drop and shelves to sag.

Our rigid cabinets are assembled in our Oldham workshop using glue and dowels under high pressure. They arrive at your door fully constructed, with doors and drawers already fitted. This saves your fitter a huge amount of time and ensures a perfect, square, and incredibly strong cabinet that will last for 20+ years. There’s simply no comparison in terms of strength and durability.

Value vs. Price: Is Flat Pack Cheaper?

On paper, a flat pack kitchen often looks cheaper. But you have to factor in the extra labour costs for your fitter to build it all. You also have to consider the lifespan. A flat pack kitchen might last 5-10 years before it starts to fail. A well-made rigid kitchen will last decades. When you look at the cost over the lifetime of the kitchen, a rigid kitchen almost always offers better value for money.

That said, there are times when flat pack can be the right choice. If you have a very tight budget, you’re a confident DIYer who can assemble it perfectly, or it’s for a temporary home or utility room, then it can make sense. But for the vast majority of homeowners who want a kitchen that looks great and stands the test of time, rigid is the only way to go. For more tips, see our main kitchen advice page.
