Flat-pack units (like those from Howdens, Wren, and most DIY stores) arrive as a box of panels, fixings, and instructions. They’re assembled on site by your fitter, using cam locks and dowels to hold the panels together. The backs are typically 3mm hardboard, pinned or stapled into a groove.

Rigid-built units (like every SJB kitchen) are assembled in a workshop using industrial machinery. The joints are cam and dowel for permanent strength. The 18mm solid backs are fully integrated into the carcass structure, providing genuine rigidity.

The practical difference is significant. A flat-pack unit with a 3mm back will start to rack and flex over time, especially under the weight of heavy items or in damp conditions. A rigid-built unit with an 18mm back stays perfectly square and solid for 20 years or more.

What carcass material do you use?
Every unit uses 18mm Egger or Kronospan MFC carcasses with solid 18mm backs. This is a significant step up from the 15mm or 16mm carcasses with 3mm hardboard backs that you’ll find at Howdens, Wren, or Magnet.

What about corner units?
Corner units are available in a range of configurations including L-shaped corners, blind corners, and carousel units. Because everything is made to order, Steve can design corner solutions that maximise storage in awkward spaces — something that off-the-shelf kitchens simply can’t do.

How much cheaper are you than Howdens?
Typically 30-50% cheaper for a comparable kitchen — and our specification is actually higher. We use 18mm backs where Howdens uses 3mm hardboard, and Blum hardware comes as standard rather than as an upgrade.

What colours are available?
