Rigid Kitchen Cabinets UK

Why Rigid Construction Makes All the Difference

There are two types of kitchen cabinet: rigid and flat-pack. The difference matters more than most people realise — and it’s one of the first things any experienced kitchen fitter will ask about when they’re pricing a job.

Rigid cabinets arrive fully assembled. The carcass is built in a controlled environment, squared up properly, and cam and dowel before it leaves the factory. When it arrives on site, it’s ready to install. Flat-pack cabinets arrive in pieces and are assembled on site — which means the quality of the finished cabinet depends entirely on who’s putting it together and how much time they’re taking.

Every cabinet SJ Ball supplies is rigid-built. That’s not a premium upgrade — it’s our standard.

Rigid vs Flat-Pack: What’s the Real Difference?

The most obvious difference is on site. A rigid cabinet arrives square. A flat-pack cabinet may or may not be square by the time it’s assembled — and if it isn’t, the doors won’t hang right, the drawers won’t run smoothly, and the fitter will spend time adjusting things that shouldn’t need adjusting.

The less obvious difference is in the joints. Rigid cabinets are cam and dowel at the factory, under controlled conditions, with the right equipment. Flat-pack cabinets are held together with cam locks — which work fine when new, but can loosen over time, particularly on base units that take the weight of a worktop and everything stored inside.

For a homeowner, the practical difference is a kitchen that looks better, lasts longer, and gives less trouble over the years. For a fitter, it’s a faster, cleaner installation with fewer callbacks.

What Our Cabinets Are Made From

Our carcasses are built from 18mm Egger or Kronospan MFC board — the same materials used by the major kitchen manufacturers. The board is moisture-resistant, durable, and available in a wide range of finishes.

Joints are made using the cam and dowel system, which is the industry standard for rigid cabinet construction. Backs are 18mm solid — not 6mm hardboard — which adds rigidity and means the cabinet won’t rack over time.

All exposed edges are finished with 0.8mm ABS edging, heat-bonded for a clean, durable finish that won’t peel or lift.
