The Showroom Tax: Why You’re Paying Too Much for Your New Kitchen
If you’ve been shopping around for a new kitchen lately, you’ve probably noticed something. The prices are absolutely mental. You walk into a glossy high street showroom, get handed a fancy brochure, and before you know it, you’re looking at a quote that looks more like a deposit on a house.
I’ve been in this game a long time, supplying kitchens to the trade and public across Greater Manchester and the UK. And I’m going to let you in on a little secret: a massive chunk of what you’re paying for in those places has nothing to do with the actual kitchen.
You’re paying what I call the “Showroom Tax.”
What is the Showroom Tax?
Think about it. Those massive, beautifully lit showrooms on retail parks don’t pay for themselves. The rent is astronomical. The business rates are eye-watering. Then you’ve got the sales staff in sharp suits, the fancy coffee machines, the glossy brochures, and the massive marketing budgets.
Who pays for all that? You do. It’s baked right into the price of every cabinet, door, and hinge they sell.
When you buy a kitchen from a big high street retailer, you’re not just buying wood and metal. You’re funding their entire operation. That’s why the same quality of kitchen can cost you thousands of pounds more just because it’s got a certain name above the door.
The Illusion of “Sale” Prices
Don’t even get me started on the perpetual “50% Off” sales. It’s the oldest trick in the book. They inflate the baseline price to an absurd level, so when they slash it in half, it looks like you’re getting the deal of the century. You’re not. You’re just paying the price it should have been in the first place—and usually, you’re still paying too much.
I don’t do sales. I don’t do gimmicks. I just give you the right price from day one. Honest, straightforward pricing. That’s how I treat my trade customers, and that’s how I treat the public.
What You Should Be Paying For
When you buy a kitchen, your money should be going into the product itself. The materials, the construction, the hardware. That’s what matters. That’s what makes a kitchen last.
Here’s what we supply direct from the manufacturer:
- Rigid Construction: Not that flimsy flat-pack rubbish you have to spend hours assembling. Our cabinets come fully built, glued, and dowelled. They’re solid.
- Proper Materials: We use 18mm Egger or Kronospan for the carcasses, including 18mm solid backs. No wobbly hardboard backs here.
- Quality Hardware: Blum soft-close hinges and Blum Antaro drawer boxes come as standard. If you want to upgrade, we offer beautiful solid oak dovetail drawer boxes.
- Custom Sizes: Because we work directly with the manufacturer, everything is made to order. Need a custom height, depth, or width? No problem. Try asking a big shed retailer for that.
The Truth About Vinyl Doors
While we’re talking about quality, let’s talk about doors. A lot of those expensive showrooms will try to sell you vinyl-wrapped doors. They look alright in the showroom, but give them a few years near an oven or a kettle, and that vinyl will start peeling and lifting. Once it goes, it’s gone. You can’t repair it.
I won’t sell you rubbish. We focus on painted, lacquered, or solid wood doors that are built to last.
