The painted Shaker look. A different buying route.

Harvey Jones is a natural reference point if you are drawn to calm, painted Shaker kitchens and a highly considered design process. Its published Shaker information describes handcrafted-to-order cabinetry, traditional joinery and an in-frame construction. That is a specific proposition, not simply a colour or door style.

SJB is an independent kitchen business, not affiliated with Harvey Jones. I have written this guide for people who like that visual language but are open to a different construction and a separate fitting route. It is not a claim that the two businesses offer the same kitchen, service or specification.

Start with the construction difference

In a true in-frame kitchen, the door sits within a fixed frame around the cabinet opening. Harvey Jones describes this approach for its Shaker and Slim Shaker ranges in its own in-frame design guide and Shaker range information.

SJB’s selected painted ranges are lay-on: the door sits over the front of the cabinet. Mornington Shaker uses a 20mm door with an ash timber frame and an ash-veneered MDF centre panel. Mornington Beaded adds a decorative internal bead, while Crathorne gives the Shaker frame a narrower proportion. Mornington Vale creates an in-frame-style appearance, but it is still lay-on construction, not true in-frame.

That distinction matters if the construction itself is non-negotiable. If you are flexible, lay-on doors can still give you a strong framed Shaker look while leaving room to focus on the layout, colour, storage and the overall feel of the room. A Shaker name describes a design language; it does not, on its own, establish cabinet construction or a quality grade.

What the SJB alternative includes

SJB supplies nationally and gives you one point of contact for the design and quotation conversation. The cabinetry is based on MFC cabinets and fillers, with the specified hinges and drawer system set out in your quote. Door material varies by range, so I will describe the selected door accurately rather than call every component solid wood throughout.

The design conversation can cover the working layout, painted door choice, handles, panels, fillers, appliances, worktops and the details that make a kitchen feel intentional. You can begin with a room plan or dimensions, or share an existing proposal so the inclusions can be compared properly. The aim is a clear specification for your room, not a vague promise based on a headline price.

Personal design without hiding the practical details

A beautiful kitchen still has to work on an ordinary Tuesday. Before comparing quotations, check whether each one includes cabinetry, fillers and end panels, drawer and hinge specifications, paint or finish, worktops, appliances, sinks and taps, delivery, VAT and fitting. Also ask what is excluded, who measures, who installs, and whether building, electrical, plumbing or decorating work sits outside the kitchen quotation.

Harvey Jones offers supply-only and complete-service routes on some of its published information, but the exact scope of any project quotation needs checking. SJB does not present itself as a Harvey Jones managed installation service. Installation and building works depend on the order scope, and customers will typically arrange their own fitter. That can suit a construction-flexible shopper who already has a trusted installer or wants to keep responsibility for fitting clear.

If you have a Harvey Jones design, another supplier’s plan or your own sketch, share the relevant details and ask for an itemised comparison. Compare like with like: a cabinet-only figure is not comparable with a figure including worktops, appliances, fitting and VAT. I will not turn an incomplete comparison into a guaranteed saving claim.

Which SJB painted style might suit you?

Mornington Shaker is the straightforward classic: a timber-framed Shaker door with a veneered centre panel. Mornington Beaded adds a finer decorative edge for a more detailed traditional feel. Crathorne uses a narrower Shaker frame and visible ash grain. Mornington Vale is the option to consider when you want an in-frame-inspired appearance while understanding that it is not true in-frame.

You can also read SJB’s broader painted Shaker kitchens guide and Shaker style explainer. These are useful starting points, but the final colour, door specification, cabinet details and timing should always be confirmed in your quotation.

A sensible next step

If true in-frame construction is essential, Harvey Jones may remain the more relevant route for your brief. If you admire the look and are open to lay-on construction, SJB can help you explore a painted Shaker plan with the differences stated plainly.

Begin your kitchen journey with SJB: share a plan, upload an existing quote or draw your room, then tell me your preferred style, appliances, worktop, budget, postcode and fitting responsibility. I can use that starting information to shape a quotation around the inclusions that matter to you.

Specification sources

Harvey Jones construction and range descriptions are available in its in-frame guide and Shaker range page. SJB door details are based on the documented PWS Mornington Shaker specification and Second Nature information for Mornington Beaded, Mornington Vale and Crathorne.

Your questions, answered

Is an SJB painted Shaker kitchen true in-frame?

No. SJB’s selected painted ranges use lay-on doors. Mornington Vale gives an in-frame-style appearance, but it is not true in-frame construction.

Are SJB’s painted Shaker doors solid wood throughout?

No. The documented ranges use painted ash timber frames with veneered MDF centre panels. The cabinet and filler specification is separate and should be confirmed in your quotation.

Can I compare an existing Harvey Jones plan or quote with SJB?

Yes. You can share a plan or existing quote for an itemised discussion of cabinetry, fillers, hardware, worktops, appliances, delivery, fitting, VAT and exclusions.

Does SJB include kitchen fitting?

Installation and building works depend on the order scope. Customers will typically arrange their own fitter, so fitting responsibility and any related works should be agreed in the quotation.
