Do You Need a Kitchen Designer?

It’s a question I get asked a lot: is it worth paying for a kitchen designer? The honest answer? For most people, no, it’s not. If you have a clear idea of the layout you want and the style you’re after, a kitchen designer is often an unnecessary expense. For over 20 years, I’ve seen homeowners create stunning, practical kitchens without one. They do their research, take good measurements, and come to us with a solid plan. My job is to turn that plan into a high-quality, rigid-built kitchen that lasts. I’m not a designer, and I’m not a fitter. I’m a cabinet manufacturer who supplies premium kitchens direct to the public and trade, at a price that the big showrooms can’t match. This guide gives you my straight-talking advice on when a designer is worth the money, and when you’re better off saving your cash and taking the lead yourself.

When You Probably Don't Need a Designer

Let’s be direct. Most kitchen projects don’t require an independent kitchen designer. If your project falls into these categories, you can confidently take the reins and save yourself a significant fee.

First, if you’re keeping your existing layout. If the sink, cooker, and fridge are all staying in roughly the same place and you’re just replacing old units with new ones, a designer has very little to add. You already have a proven layout that works for your space. Your job is to choose the style, colour, and finish of your new doors and worktops.

Second, if you have a clear vision. Perhaps you’ve spent months on Pinterest, you’ve got a scrapbook of ideas, and you know exactly what you want – a handleless matt graphite kitchen, a classic painted shaker, or a modern slab door. If you can show me a sketch, a photo, or even a plan from another company, we can make it for you. We work from your measurements to build the cabinets. The design is your own.

Many people worry about getting the measurements right, and that’s a valid concern. But it’s a practical task, not a design one. All you need is a tape measure and a bit of care. Measure everything twice, draw a simple diagram with the dimensions, and we can use that to build your kitchen. Remember, because we make everything to order, we can build cabinets to custom widths and depths, so you’re not limited to standard off-the-shelf sizes. This gives you huge flexibility to get a perfect fit without needing a designer to solve awkward gaps.

When is a Kitchen Designer Worth It?

While I’m a big advocate for homeowner-led design, there are absolutely times when a professional designer is a worthwhile investment. They aren’t just choosing colours; a good independent designer is a qualified expert in spatial planning.

If you’re undertaking a major renovation, such as an extension, knocking down walls, or completely reconfiguring the ground floor of your house, a designer’s input can be invaluable. They will see the space differently and can come up with layout options you might never have considered. They’ll think about workflow, ergonomics, lighting design, and how the kitchen integrates with the rest of your home. This is their expertise, and in a complex project, it can be money well spent.

Another reason to hire a designer is if you are completely lost for ideas. If you find the sheer number of choices overwhelming and have no idea where to start, a designer can guide you through the process, helping you to define your style and needs. They can act as a project manager, coordinating different tradespeople, which can be a godsend if you’re short on time.

The key here is to hire an **independent designer**. They work for you. The ‘designers’ in the big national sheds are salespeople. Their primary goal is to sell you a kitchen from their limited range, using their preferred components. An independent designer offers impartial advice and can design a kitchen using components from any supplier – including us.

Our Role: Your Manufacturing Partner

So where do we fit in? Think of SJB Trade Kitchens as your manufacturing partner. We don’t offer an in-house design service because we’re focused on what we do best: building exceptional quality kitchen cabinets. You bring the design, and we bring the manufacturing expertise.

We build rigid kitchen cabinets from high-grade 18mm Egger and Kronospan board, including solid 18mm back panels. This is a world away from the flimsy flat-pack units you’ll find elsewhere. Our doors are top-tier too; our painted Shaker doors are solid wood, and our gloss doors are acrylic or lacquered for a perfect, durable finish. We never use cheap vinyl wraps.

By cutting out the middleman and the expensive showroom, you get a far superior quality kitchen for your money. We supply the same (and often better) products as the high-end studios, but at a price that’s typically 30-50% less than the likes of Howdens. All our pricing is transparent, with no smoke-and-mirrors sales.

Whether you have a detailed plan from an architect, a simple sketch on the back of an envelope, or a quote from another company you want us to beat, we can work with it. We’ll build the exact units you need, complete with premium Blum soft-close hinges and drawers as standard, and deliver them to your door, anywhere in the UK.
