Kitchen Renovation On A Budget

Getting a new kitchen is a big investment, and it’s easy to feel like your budget is being stretched before you’ve even started. I’m Steve, and I’ve been in the kitchen industry for over 20 years, from retail to manufacturing. Now, I run SJB Trade Kitchens, supplying high-quality rigid-built cabinets directly to homeowners and tradespeople across the country. I’m not a salesman, and I’m not a fitter. My job is to make the best cabinets I can and sell them for a fair price. This guide is my honest, straight-talking advice on how to get a fantastic new kitchen without spending a fortune. It’s about making smart choices, knowing where to spend your money, and understanding where the real value lies.

Where to Spend and Where to Save on Your Kitchen Renovation

When you're on a budget, every pound counts. The secret is to put your money into the parts of the kitchen that are difficult and expensive to change later, and save on the elements that are easier to upgrade down the line. It’s about long-term value, not just the initial price tag.

Where to Spend:

  • Carcasses: This is the single most important part of your kitchen. The carcasses are the skeleton of your kitchen units. You want them to be solid, sturdy, and built to last. All our carcasses are made from 18mm Egger or Kronospan board, and crucially, they have 18mm solid backs. Many cheaper kitchens use flimsy 3mm or 6mm hardboard backs, which can bow and warp over time, especially with the weight of plates and pans. A solid 18mm back keeps the cabinet square and rigid for life. This is a non-negotiable for a quality kitchen.
  • Worktops: Your worktop takes a lot of punishment every day. Investing in a durable, good-quality worktop will pay dividends. While laminate worktops are the most budget-friendly and have improved massively in quality, if you can stretch the budget, a solid surface or quartz will give you incredible longevity and a premium feel.
  • Drawer Runners and Hinges: There is nothing more frustrating than a drawer that doesn’t run smoothly or a door that slams shut. That’s why we fit Blum soft-close hinges and drawer boxes as standard in all our cabinets. They are the best in the business for a reason and will stand up to years of daily use. Don’t compromise on hardware; it’s what makes your kitchen a pleasure to use.

Where to Save:

  • Doors: This might sound surprising, but your kitchen doors are one of the easiest things to change in the future. Our cabinets are a standard size, so you can always buy new doors and drawer fronts in a few years if you fancy a change of style or colour. You can get a very cost-effective, stylish look with our Slab Matt or Shaker Foil ranges, and then upgrade to a painted solid wood door later if you wish.
  • Handles: Handles are like jewellery for your kitchen and can be swapped out in minutes. You can start with a simple, budget-friendly handle and upgrade to something more luxurious later on. Or, choose a handleless style to avoid the cost of handles altogether.
  • Tiles and Splashbacks: These can be expensive, but there are many smart, budget-friendly alternatives. You could paint the wall with a durable kitchen paint, use upstands that match your worktop, or even look at self-adhesive tile options for a temporary fix. The splashback behind the hob is the most important area to protect, but you don’t need to tile the entire kitchen.

The Single Biggest Money-Saver: Supply-Only vs. Fully Fitted

This is the big one. The difference between buying your kitchen ‘supply-only’ and getting a ‘fully fitted’ service from a big national retailer can be thousands of pounds. When you buy a fully fitted kitchen, you’re not just paying for the product and the installation; you’re also paying for their project management, their sales commissions, their huge showrooms, and their marketing budgets. The markup on the actual kitchen units can be enormous.

Buying supply-only puts you in control. You buy the cabinets, doors, and worktops directly from a manufacturer like us, and then you hire a local kitchen fitter to install it. We have transparent pricing all year round, so you know you’re getting a fair price – often 30-50% cheaper than the likes of Howdens. You can then get quotes from a few local fitters and choose the one you trust. A good local tradesperson will often do a better job for a fraction of the cost of a retailer’s subcontracted team. It’s the most efficient and cost-effective way to get a new kitchen, and it’s how the trade has done it for years.

Rigid vs. Flat-Pack: A False Economy?

Flat-pack kitchens always look cheaper on paper, but it’s often a false economy. The problem with flat-pack isn’t just the hassle of building it all yourself; it’s the quality and the hidden costs. Most flat-pack kitchens use lower-density board and those flimsy hardboard backs I mentioned earlier. They are simply not as strong or durable as a rigid-built cabinet.

All our cabinets are delivered to you rigid-built. They are assembled in our workshop in Oldham using glue and dowels, creating a perfectly square and incredibly strong unit. This not only gives you a much better quality, longer-lasting product, but it also saves you a significant amount of money on installation. Your kitchen fitter isn’t spending days building cabinets from a set of instructions; they are simply moving them into place. This means the fitting process is much faster, and a faster fit means a cheaper bill from your fitter. When you factor in the fitting cost, a rigid-built kitchen often works out to be better value than a seemingly cheaper flat-pack alternative.

Keep Your Layout, Save a Fortune

One of the biggest hidden costs in a kitchen renovation is moving the services. If you decide to move your sink, your oven, or your dishwasher, you’re not just moving a cabinet; you’re moving the plumbing and the electrics. This can add hundreds, if not thousands, of pounds to your bill, as you’ll need to hire plumbers and electricians to re-route pipes and wires. This often involves chasing into walls, which then need to be re-plastered and decorated.

If your current kitchen layout works for you, the most sensible and budget-friendly decision you can make is to keep it. By keeping the sink and major appliances in the same position, you can avoid all that extra cost and complexity. This allows you to focus your entire budget on the things that will make the biggest visual and functional impact: the new cabinets and worktops. It’s the simplest and most effective way to keep your kitchen renovation on a budget.

Smart Choices for Budget-Friendly Kitchen Styles

You don’t need to spend a fortune to get a stylish kitchen. Some of our most popular and contemporary styles are also our most cost-effective. The price of a kitchen door is largely determined by the material it’s made from and the complexity of the manufacturing process.

Our Shaker Foil and Slab Matt ranges are fantastic options for a budget-conscious renovation. A slab door is a flat door, which is simpler to manufacture than a five-piece shaker door. Our foil-wrapped shaker doors provide the classic shaker look at a more accessible price point than a painted solid wood door. These doors are incredibly durable, easy to clean, and come in a range of modern, on-trend colours and finishes.

The key thing to remember is that no matter which door style you choose, it will be fitted to the exact same high-quality cabinet. You still get the 18mm rigid carcass, the 18mm solid back, and the Blum soft-close hardware as standard. You’re getting the bones of a premium kitchen, allowing you to create a high-end look for a fraction of the price. By choosing a cost-effective door style, you can afford to get the high-quality foundation right, ensuring your kitchen looks great and lasts for years to come.
