Trade Kitchen Suppliers vs. High Street Showrooms: What’s the Real Difference?

If you’re in the market for a new kitchen, you’ve probably been to one of the big high street showrooms. You walk in, see all the glossy displays, and get offered a cup of coffee by a friendly designer. It all feels very professional. Then you see the price tag, often followed by a tempting “50% off sale!” offer. On the other hand, you’ve got trade suppliers like us. The experience is different, and frankly, the prices are too. So, what’s the real story? After 20 years in this industry, from retail kitchens to manufacturing, I want to give you the straight-talking guide to what you’re actually paying for.

The Showroom Experience: What Are You Actually Paying For?

Let's be honest, the big national kitchen retailers have beautiful showrooms. They spend millions on them, and it shows. They’re in prime retail locations with high rents and business rates. They have large teams of salespeople, managers, and designers. They have massive advertising budgets. But here’s the thing: all of that costs money. A lot of money. And those costs have to be covered somehow. They are covered by the price you pay for your kitchen.

When you see a kitchen with a £20,000 price tag that’s suddenly on sale for £10,000, you’re not really getting a 50% discount. The kitchen was never intended to be sold at £20,000. That’s an inflated starting price designed to make the sale price look like an incredible bargain. It’s a classic retail tactic. At SJB, we don’t play those games. We have one price list, and it’s the same fair, transparent price for everyone, all year round. We’re consistently 30-50% cheaper than the likes of Howdens because we don’t have those huge overheads to pass on to you.

The 'designer' you meet in a showroom is often a salesperson first and a designer second. Their job is to sell you a kitchen, often with targets to hit. While many are talented, their primary role is to close a deal. They might steer you towards more expensive options or extras you don’t necessarily need. It’s a high-pressure environment designed to get you to sign on the dotted line before you have too much time to think about it.

Painted Shaker Kitchens Altrincham - Trade Kitchen Supplier

The Trade Supplier Model: A Different Approach

So, what’s the alternative? Buying from a trade kitchen supplier like us is a different ball game. We’re manufacturers first and foremost. We build the cabinets ourselves in our workshop, right here in Oldham. This means we control the quality and we cut out the middleman. There’s no retail chain adding their markup. You’re buying more directly from the source.

Our overheads are much lower. We have a showroom, but it’s a functional, working space on a trading estate, not a multi-million-pound palace on a retail park. We don’t have a huge team of salespeople. When you call us, you’re often speaking directly to me, Steve, or one of the team who genuinely knows kitchens inside and out. We focus on providing a high-quality product at an honest price. We don’t need to inflate our prices to cover massive marketing campaigns or fancy showrooms.

This model allows for incredible flexibility. Because we make everything to order, we’re not limited to standard catalogue sizes. Need a cabinet that’s 550mm wide instead of 600mm? No problem. Need a unit with a custom depth to hide some pipework? We can do that. This is something the big retailers often can’t or won’t do. They are set up for mass production of standard sizes. With us, you get a level of customisation that’s usually only associated with very high-end bespoke kitchen companies, but at a trade price.

Let's Talk About Quality: Cabinets, Doors, and Hardware

This is the most important part. A cheaper price doesn’t mean lower quality. In fact, it’s often the complete opposite. The heart of any kitchen is the cabinet, or carcass. Many high street showrooms use 15mm thick board, often with a flimsy 3mm or 6mm hardboard back. This is a key area where they cut costs. We don’t believe in that. All our cabinets are made from 18mm Egger or Kronospan board, and that includes a solid 18mm back panel. This makes our units incredibly strong and rigid. They are built to last a lifetime.

Then there are the doors. For our gloss kitchens, we use either acrylic-faced MDF or a high-quality lacquer finish. These are premium, durable finishes that look fantastic and are easy to clean. We never, ever use vinyl-wrapped doors. Vinyl can peel and delaminate over time, especially when exposed to heat and steam from a kettle or dishwasher. It’s a cheaper, inferior product. For our painted Shaker kitchens, we use solid wood frames. Many companies use MDF for their Shaker doors because it’s cheaper, but we believe in using the right materials for the job.

Finally, it’s about the bits you don’t always see. The hardware – hinges and drawer runners – is what makes a kitchen feel solid and work smoothly day-to-day. We use Blum soft-close hinges and drawers as standard. Blum is an Austrian company widely regarded as the best in the business. We also use hardware from Hafele and Kessebohmer for our internal storage solutions. These are all top-tier German brands. The big retailers often charge extra for this level of hardware, offering a lower-spec version as standard. With us, the best is included from the start.

Design, Service, and Delivery: What's the Process?

One of the perceived benefits of a high street showroom is the design service. They’ll sit down with you and create a 3D plan. We do that too. We offer a free design and quote service. The difference is, we’re not just trying to sell you what we have in stock. We’re listening to what you need and designing a kitchen that works for your space and your budget. We’re cabinet makers, so we think about the practicalities of the installation and how to make the best use of the room.

It’s important to be clear: we are a supply-only company. We manufacture and deliver your kitchen. We are not kitchen fitters. This is a crucial distinction. The big showrooms often bundle fitting into their packages, but you pay a premium for it. By arranging your own fitter, you have more control and can often save a significant amount of money. We can provide you with detailed plans for your fitter to work from, and because our cabinets are delivered rigid-built (not flat-pack), the installation process is much quicker and easier for them.

Our nationwide delivery service means you can get a high-quality, rigid-built kitchen delivered to your door anywhere in the UK, often from as little as 10 working days. Because we make to order, we don’t have to wait for stock to come in from a central warehouse. We build your kitchen, for you, and then we ship it. It’s a simple, efficient process that’s built around the customer, not a complex corporate supply chain.

The Bottom Line: Who Should You Buy From?

So, who is right for you? If you want the full retail experience with a plush showroom, and you’re comfortable paying the premium that comes with it, then a high street brand might be the right choice. They offer a very managed, all-in-one service that some people find reassuring.

However, if you’re a savvy buyer who wants the best possible quality for your money, and you’re happy to arrange your own installation, then a trade supplier is almost certainly the better option. You get a superior quality cabinet, better hardware, more flexibility on sizes, and a much more transparent price. You’re cutting out the expensive middlemen and the retail fluff and putting your money directly into the quality of the product itself. It’s how the trade has bought kitchens for years, and now, homeowners can benefit from it too.
